INTO THE WOODS at SHN Golden Theatre

“TRULY ENCHANTING! THESE ARE THE WOODS THAT YOU WANT TO GET LOST IN, A PLACE YOU’LL FIND BURIED TREASURES THAT YOU DIDN’T EVEN KNOW EXISTED.”
– BEN BRANTLEY, THE NEW YORK TIMES

Venture back INTO THE WOODS with the acclaimed Fiasco Theater production that the Associated Press called “ingenious and bewitching.” Unanimously praised and extended twice at Roundabout’s Laura Pels Theater, the Tony Award®-winning musical classic by Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine has been mounted with boundless imagination. This witty and wildly theatrical re-invention, produced by the Dodgers (Jersey Boys, Matilda) and NETworks Presentations (The Phantom of the Opera, War Horse, South Pacific), is INTO THE WOODS as you’ve never seen it before!

Including dazzling songs like “Children Will Listen” and “No One Is Alone,” this thrillingly clever new version made Ben Brantley of The New York Times fall “head over heels.” Mind the wolf, heed the witch and honor the giant in the sky at this extraordinary musical about the power of wishes and what really happens after they come true.

RENT THE 20TH ANNIVERSARY TOUR at Orpheum Theatre SF

In 1996, an original rock musical by a little-known composer opened on Broadway… and forever changed the landscape of American theatre. Two decades later, Jonathan Larson’s RENT continues to speak loudly and defiantly to audiences across generations and all over the world. And now, this Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award®-winning masterpiece returns to the stage in a vibrant 20th anniversary touring production.

A re-imagining of Puccini's La Bohème, RENT follows an unforgettable year in the lives of seven artists struggling to follow their dreams without selling out. With its inspiring message of joy and hope in the face of fear, this timeless celebration of friendship and creativity reminds us to measure our lives with the only thing that truly matters—love.

FUN HOME at Curran Theatre San Francisco

Fun Home -- winner of five 2015 Tony Awards, including Best Musical -- reopens the historic Curran, after a massive two-year renovation and restoration. Fun Home, based on Alison Bechdel's best-selling graphic memoir, has been praised as "something of a miracle" (New York magazine). The Tony-winning best musical tells the story of Alison at three different ages, alongside her uniquely dysfunctional family -- her mother, brothers and brilliant, volatile father. Intimate, emotional and refreshingly honest, Fun Home captures the experience of seeing your parents through grown-up eyes. See the show the SF Chronicle calls "refreshing and ... a trend-setting success for a mainstream musical. ... So lovely and complex is every song, every stage picture ... at the newly and gorgeously renovated Curran."
Description

The Curran has housed some of the most important productions in history and has maintained a reputation over the course of its life as one of the greatest venues in North America. Now, nearly 100 years after it welcomed its first Bay Area audiences, the Curran has just completed the most extensive and celebratory renovation and restoration the Curran has had since it was built in 1922. Under the curation of eight-time Tony Award winner Carole Shorenstein Hays, the Curran is reopening as a 1,600-seat venue with a new mission: to act as a home for the most exciting stage works being conceived and created anywhere in the world, where audiences and artists are part of the same community.

“Inspirational, outstanding . . . a story of hope and of life!”
The Guardian

A Thousand Splendid Suns is the epic story of three generations of Afghan women who are bound together by marriage, family, and a secret past, amid the war-torn streets of modern-day Kabul. Strong-willed Laila, unmarried and pregnant, is forced to marry her older neighbor when her family and home are torn apart. In her new home, she forges an extraordinary and unlikely friendship with Mariam, her husband’s first wife, and together the two women find the hope and strength to raise a new generation. Based on the best-selling novel by Khaled Hosseini that sold over seven million copies and featuring live music from composer and saw player David Coulter (Kronos Quartet; The Black Rider), this stunning world premiere is not to be missed.
This production depicts violence and mature themes, and utilizes theatrical smoke.
