Pursued by a ruthless Soviet officer determined to silence her, Anya enlists the aid of a dashing conman and a lovable ex-aristocrat. Together, they embark on an epic adventure to help her find home, love, and family.

A Thousand Splendid Suns is the epic story of three generations of Afghan women who are bound together by marriage, family, and a secret past, amid the war-torn streets of modern-day Kabul. In her new home, she forges an extraordinary and unlikely friendship with Mariam, her husband’s first wife, and together the two women find the hope and strength to raise a new generation. Based on the best-selling novel by Khaled Hosseini that sold over seven million copies and featuring live music from composer and saw player David Coulter (Kronos Quartet; The Black Rider), this stunning world premiere is not to be missed.

CIRQUE DREAMS at Curran Theatre



Experience gingerbread men flipping mid-air, toy soldiers marching on thin wires, snowmen intricately balancing, icemen sculpting, penguins spinning, puppets dancing and reindeer soaring high above a landscape of holiday wonderment in Cirque Dreams: Holidaze. This visual marvel of a show features an original music score (and some seasonal favorites), more than 30 international artists in beautiful costumes and marvelous settings filled with colossal candy canes, gigantic gifts, and 30-foot-tall towering soldiers. This touring show, which "dazzled" at The Kennedy Center, according to The Washington Post, brings the magic of the holidays to life before your eyes with so much energy that the New York Daily News says it "could end our dependence on oil."

Smuin Ballet's XXtremes Explores Desire, Loss and Paradox Palace of Fine Arts Theatre (3301 Lyon StreetSan Francisco, CA 94123)


A heart-rending debut, a crowd-pleasing favorite and an iconic work are the highlights of Smuin Ballet's XXtremes Fall Program. For the first time ever in Northern California, the company will perform Jiri Kylian's acclaimed Return to a Strange Land, set to music by Czech composer Leos Janacek.
